A negative market price
With lots of sun and wind there is more power than needed, and the market price drops below zero. Every kWh that goes onto the grid then costs money.
Energy supplier
Coming soon, once net metering ends. You can already give permission in the app.
Why after 2027
On 1 January 2027 net metering ends. That changes what a kWh you feed in is worth to you.
Until 2027
Your supplier has to deliver power when it’s expensive, in the evening and at high demand, in exchange for power you feed in when it’s worth little. With more and more solar panels, those costs keep rising. Suppliers have been passing them on through feed-in charges for a few years.
From 2027
Instead of net metering you get a feed-in compensation, and it’s low. Then it can actually lower your energy bill if your installation feeds in less at the right moments. That’s what dimming on behalf of your supplier is for.
When it pays
At those moments, power you feed in costs your supplier money. Feeding in less then helps you both.
With lots of sun and wind there is more power than needed, and the market price drops below zero. Every kWh that goes onto the grid then costs money.
In some quarter-hours more power is fed in nationally than used. Suppliers pay for that imbalance.
Suppliers buy power in advance based on a forecast. If more is generated or less is used than expected, feeding in less helps close the gap.
Where we are now
We’re in talks with most Dutch energy suppliers to make dimming solar panels part of smart energy contracts. Whether and when it applies to you depends on your supplier.
Have a dynamic contract? Then you can save already. Dimming at negative prices
Now
In the settings you can already give permission to dim on behalf of your energy supplier.
2026
Together with energy suppliers we test and validate dimming, so it’s ready when net metering ends.
Spring 2027
The goal: dimming as part of smart contracts, with a lower energy bill for those who take part.
Frequently asked questions
Not yet. You can already give permission in the app, so we can start straight away once your supplier takes part.
That depends on your supplier and your contract. There is no fixed amount yet.
Yes. In the app you choose who may dim your solar panels, and you can switch on more than one.
No. We dim through the cloud of your inverter manufacturer, following their guidelines and keeping your warranty intact.
